In the medical field, various types of tapes and sheets such as wound dressing material, adhesive tapes to hold gauze, etc.
in place and transdermal drug delivery tapes are being used.
Superb features and safety are required of such products for the protection of life and health.
“Can you make a tape with a steaming effect by applying an ointment and pasting a tape / sheet on it?” This request was the catalyst for us to advance into a new line of business in the medical field from what we had been involved in at the Ibaraki Plant since 1967, i.e. production of adhesive sheets for first-aid bandages, sanitary material and pesticides.
It was in 1978 that we perfected the “Skin Disease Treatment Patches”, the first domestically manufactured pharmaceutical adhesive sheet.
Thereafter, our business in pharmaceutical products got on track and we gave birth to the “Systemic Transdermal Drug Delivery Patches” in 1983, the first product of its kind made in Japan.
One day, while developing adhesive for the transdermal drug delivery patches, we made it too sticky by making the adhesive softer than usual. Although it failed as the tape formulation, we paid attention to the fact that it does not hurt when it peeled off from the skin, and we began to develop the surgical tape which made use of this feature; a gentle surgical skin tape, ""YUKI-BAN™" born in 1994 that adheres firmly when sticking and does not hurt when peeling off.
Currently, "YUKI-BAN™" is used in many hospitals, including tubing fixation during artificial dialysis.
In 2005 we entered the field of nucleic acid medicine which is being focused as the next-generation pharmaceutical. In 2011 we acquired Avecia Biotechnology Inc., a contract manufacturing organization specializing in oligonucleotide production and established Nitto Denko Avecia Inc.
In 2016 we acquired assets of Irvine Pharmaceutical Services Inc, who provided pharmaceutical analysis services through Nitto Denko Avecia, and Avrio Biopharmaceuticals LLC, a provider of aseptic fill-finish services and established Nitto Avecia Pharma Services Inc.
By converging various kinds of technologies and knowledge, Nitto continue to take initiatives in the development of new technologies.
We consider changes as opportunities. Moving forward from our 100th anniversary, we continue to take on challenges with the hope to bring satisfaction to our customers.
