Release Technology

With packaging tape or double-coated tape, a release agent is applied to the back of the tape or the surface of the release liner to enable the tape to be smoothly unrolled. When processing double-coated tape to a certain specification the use of a release liner is especially important.
Release liners must be made of materials that do not easily stick to the adhesive. Generally, long-chain alkyl or silicone types are used depending on the application.
As adhesion properties deteriorate if the release agent is transferred to the surface of the adhesive, it is important to use as little as possible and to apply it as thinly and evenly as possible (several nm to several tens of nm).
Because they are invisible, most people are unaware of the fact that release agents are the unsung heroes of adhesive tapes, working behind the scenes to ensure that they function as intended.
Although the materials used vary according to the intended application of the adhesive tape, they generally include a long-chain alkyl or silicone release agent. For specialized electronics applications, the development of release technology utilizing non-silicone release agents is required as silicone can have a detrimental effect on electronic components.
At Nitto Denko we are constantly exploring new possibilities with regard to release technology in order to simplify processes and improve productivity for our customers.

Release Agent Aim and Performance

Aim

  • To ensure that adhesive tape can be smoothly wound.
  • To ensure that adhesive tape can be removed smoothly from the release liner.
Required performance
  • Release characteristics compatible with the intended application of adhesive products.
  • No detrimental effect on adhesive.
  • Minimal changes in winding strength and release liner performance due to changes in environmental conditions.
