Decorative Near-infrared (NIR) Transmission Film

Technology to Manipulate Invisible Light: The future opened up by Decorative Near-infrared Transmission Film

Near-infrared technology plays an important role in our daily lives. It is applied in a wide range of fields, including security cameras, automated driving, high-speed communications, and medical care, making our daily lives safer and more convenient.
Here, we introduce Nitto's “Decorative Near-infrared Transmission Film”, which is accelerating the evolution of near-infrared technology.

Would you like to join us in developing new businesses and products by using Nitto's technological assets of decorative near-infrared transmission film?

What is a Decorative Near-infrared Transmission Film ?

Decorative near-infrared transmission film is a special film that blocks visible light and transmits near-infrared rays. While conventional near-infrared transmission film has been usually black or gray, the decorative near-infrared transmission film developed by Nitto is an innovative product that combines designability and functionality.

  • High designability: As it is white-colored, it can be used in combination with near-infrared transmitting color materials to create vivid decorative effects. By combining with films of various colors, it is also possible to add any design you desire.
  • Superior near-infrared transmissivity: Efficient transmission of near-infrared rays improves the performance of sensors and cameras.
  • Flexible customizability: Also available in large sizes, and can be customized to meet the needs of customers.

Mechanism of Decorative Near-infrared Transmission Film

Decorative near-infrared transmission film has highly position-controlled fine particles dispersed internally by our unique fine particle alignment technology. These fine particles scatter visible light (gray arrows in the figure) in various directions, making the film appear white to the human eye. Near-infrared rays (red arrows in the figure), however, are hardly affected by these fine particles and are efficiently transmitted.

This characteristic makes it possible to obtain information hidden under the surface when viewed with sensors or near-infrared cameras, even though the human eye or normal cameras show nothing but pure white. For example, as shown in the figure on the left, you can see a hidden image that would appear white on a normal camera by taking a picture with a near-infrared camera.
