Contributing to Local Communities 2017

Supporting the Victims of the Marawi Siege

In May 2017, an armed conflict in the Philippines flared up in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, between government security forces and Islamic militants, which resulted in a high level of casualties and damage to property. Furthermore, due to shortages of food and supplies, hunger stalked and fighting arose among the victims of this conflict. Nitto Denko (Philippines) Corporation launched a relief program to address this problem. They made an appeal for contributions from their employees and on August 13 offered basic family needs, including blankets and children’s clothing, via a foundation affiliated with leading Philippines broadcasting station GMA Network.

Donating Adhesive Tapes to Develop Educational Materials for Street-Connected Children

Nitto Belgium NV donated foam tapes to Mobile School, a Belgian NPO supporting the education of street-connected children. Together with Munsterbilzen Municipal School, Mobile School develops mobile blackboards that they use to provide educational opportunities to children through partnerships with NPOs in various countries and regions. More than 300 educational panels on subjects ranging from literacy to street business are held across Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

In the past, as many as 230 rivets were required to build such a blackboard. With Nitto Group’s foam tapes, however, now only 60 screws are needed and assembly time has been reduced from one month to one week. Furthermore, with the use of our tapes, their construction is resistant against water and no longer requires the application of silicone glue to make the frame watertight.

Bring Smiles to Children’s Faces at Nitto ATP Finals

During the Nitto ATP Finals, which were held at London’s The O2 arena from the 12th to the 19th of November, the Nitto Group organized a variety of charitable activities. Through these activities, we hoped to bring to life our mission of “bringing smiles on the faces of the children.”

We donated mascot spaces to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) which gave children the opportunity to walk on court with their tennis heroes. Through the support of spectators at the event, we also raised over £3,800 for UNICEF. Further to these activities, Nitto made a £30,000 donation to UNICEF, split evenly across two of their programs; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) that aims to ensure that all children have the right to clean water and basic sanitation; and Health where UNICEF envisions a world where no child dies from a preventable disease and that all children reach their full potential in health and well-being.

Through the British children’s hospital Great Ormond Street Hospital and the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, we invited young patients battling serious diseases and their family members to enjoy the Nitto ATP Finals as our VIP guests. The 57 invitees all thoroughly enjoyed watching the exciting matches and their faces beamed with smiles as they were presented with special gifts which included premium Nitto Group products. As a special surprise, they were also individually greeted by the players and left the arena with personal words of encouragement from them.
